Our society is obsessed with extremes. I’ve read so many articles on “how to become a morning person,” I’ve lost count. I’m not a morning person. As a child, I was so cracky in the morning, my mother reports you could hardly look in my direction.
What IS this miracle morning everyone is talking about? Articles about people that wake up at 4am to seize the day! Is 4am considered the morning now? Isn’t 4am THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT?
I take some solace in that the majority of these people have children, and thus, must fight, tooth and nail, for every spare second before the terrors awake!
Recently, I was listening to a podcast by a successful millennial and she shared something miraculous. She claimed she never gets up until 8am and starts work at 10am. That day, I KNEW there was hope for me! Finally, a voice of reason, in between the Mark Walberg’s of the world that rise at 2am. Again, THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT PEOPLE! You will be happy to hear that the majority of people get up at 7am.
I’ve had a little bit more pep in my step when it comes to mornings due to a simple routine I implemented two years ago.
By no means am I seizing the wee hours before the sun comes up, but I’ve created these steps based on countless articles, books, and blogs that I’ve read. Here they are:
MY SIMPLE MORNING ROUTINE:
DRINK A GLASS OF WATERas soon as you get up. That brain is dehydrated like a raisin and needs some fluids stat!
MOVE YOUR BODY.Why in the world, after being in the horizontal position for 6-7-8 hours, do we get up, and spend the rest of our day sitting? A simple 5 minute stretch will make all the difference.
A RITUAL YOU ENJOY. Make a matcha latte, enjoy making your smoothie, turn on some music and dance around your kitchen! You will begin to associate the morning with a pleasurable experience. None of this, get a cold shower crap, or plugging into an ice cold river like Tony Robbins. You really want to subject yourself to that torture first thing?? For some of us, waking up is torture enough!
And…the MOST Important:
FIND YOUR WHY. I’m going to tell it to you straight, because we are friends. If you don’t know where you’re going in life, you’re probably never going to get over your morning blues. If you’re in this boat, you need to find some clarity on your why. WHY are you waking up every morning?
To help you with that WHY:
SET INTENTIONS THE NIGHT BEFORE. Take 5-10 minutes of your evening, sit in a quiet spot and reflect on the day that just passed, then write down at least 2 intentions for the day ahead.
Set that intention and go out and seize the day! And sheesh, stretch those hamstrings first thing! Your 60 year old self will thank-you for it.
Coming soon: Everything I’ve learned about setting intentions.
